The brief

The company, and what it needed.

Who they are

Plumbline is a construction leadership training company. Contractors bring it in when they promote their best tradespeople to crew leader, usually with no training for the half of the job that isn't the tools.

The problem

New crew leaders get promoted for being good with the tools, then learn to run people the hard way. Classroom days pull them off site, and nobody reads a binder in a site trailer.

What they asked for

Something a crew leader can do on a phone in the ten minutes before the morning huddle. Video first, very little reading, and practice on the calls they actually have to make.

    Each idea gets a drawn film of about eighty seconds: one sheet of plan paper, line drawings that draw themselves as a foreman talks, and one move to use tomorrow. Captions for loud sites.

    A decide-or-escalate scenario with better and worse calls and what each one costs by Friday. Try it: pick what you'd do.

    Give him the same answer anyone on the crew would get. If he's late, he makes up the minutes after knock-off like the apprentice would. Then buy him one coffee off site and say it once: he's still your buddy, the job changed. The crew is watching whether there's one set of rules.
