# Generate a Full Course with AI

> Describe a course, confirm a short brief, review the outline, and let the lessons write themselves, grounded in your own material

The AI generator turns a description of a course into a finished draft. You describe it, confirm a short brief, review the outline, and the lessons are written for you and appear one by one. You can ground the whole thing in your own files, links, and [Knowledge](/docs/content/knowledge) sources so the result sounds like you, not like generic AI filler.

<Note>
  AI course generation runs on AI credits and is included on every plan, the free preview trial included. Your very first course, built during setup, is free (see [Quickstart](/docs/quickstart)). See [AI credits and access](#ai-credits-and-access) below.
</Note>

## Where to start

Open **Courses** and click **Create new course**. The screen is headed **What course are we creating today?**, with **Fayne Agent · Beta** above it. Prefer to build it by hand? **Start with a blank course**, under the description box, creates an empty course instead.

1. **Add material to build from** (optional): **Choose files**, **Add link**, **Google Drive** (when shown), or **From your Knowledge**. See [Ground it in your own material](#ground-it-in-your-own-material).
2. **Describe your course**: who it's for, what they'll be able to do afterwards, and what you want to cover. A few sentences is plenty.
3. Click **Create brief** (or press **Enter**).

Prefer to think out loud first? **Talk it through instead** takes what you typed to the chat on Home. See [Talk it through](#talk-it-through) below.

Building one of the courses Fayne planned for you during setup? Open it from the **In the works** row on the **Courses** page: the brief below comes already filled in. See [Courses in the works](/docs/academy/courses#courses-in-the-works).

<Tip>
  You do not have to write a polished description. A few sentences are enough; the brief in the next step fills in the rest, and you can change all of it.
</Tip>

## The brief

Fayne drafts a **Course brief** from what you wrote and attached, which takes a few seconds and costs no credits. Everything on it is editable:

* **Title**
* **Audience**: who the course is written for and what they struggle with. Every lesson is pitched at this person.
* **Promise**: the change the course delivers by the end.
* **Outcomes**: what learners will be able to do. You need at least two, and can add up to eight.
* **Angle**: the narrative frame that runs through the whole course. Fayne suggests a few and preselects its recommendation; pick one.

Open **Advanced settings** to tune the shape of the course:

| Setting | Options |
| - | - |
| **Lessons** | 3 to 15, including knowledge checks. Prefilled with Fayne's recommendation. |
| **Lesson length** | **Bite-size** (the default: 2 to 3 minutes each, one idea per lesson), **Standard** (about 5 minutes each), or **In-depth** (8 to 10 minutes each). |
| **Knowledge checks** | **None**, **Some** (a short check after each module), or **Many** (a check every two or three lessons). See [Knowledge checks](/docs/content/knowledge-checks). |
| **Your sources** | Shown when you attached material. **My words** keeps your wording and examples, **Adapt** keeps your frameworks but restructures freely, **Inspire** treats your material as background and writes fresh. |
| **Notes** | Anything else the course must respect: tone, things to avoid, must-have examples. |

When the brief looks right, click **Create outline**.

### Steer with the agent

On a wide screen, a side panel lets you ask for changes in plain words (**Steer the brief here**). Suggestions such as **Shorter course**, **Narrow the audience**, and **Different angle** fill in the message for you. Before the outline exists, changes go to the brief form; after, they revise the outline. Each message costs 2 credits.

## The outline

About a minute later the **Outline** appears: every lesson with its title and objective, grouped into [modules](/docs/content/modules) on longer courses, with knowledge checks marked **Check**. Edit any title or objective inline. For bigger changes (reorder, add or drop lessons, move a check), ask the agent in the side panel.

Nothing is written until you click **Draft N lessons**.

## Drafting

The lessons are written and saved one at a time, and each row shows its progress ("Drafting lesson 3…"). Checks are written last, from the finished lessons of their module, so their questions match what was taught. Fayne also adds up to four illustrations to the course, always including the first lesson and never on a check, at no credit cost.

You can leave the page: drafting continues in the background. Reopen it from the **In the works** row on the **Courses** page, or click **Open the course so far** to go to the editor while it writes. Until the first lesson is saved, the editor shows **Planning your lessons…** or **Writing your first lesson…** and opens by itself when it's ready; later lessons appear in the sidebar as they finish.

<Tip>
  To cancel, choose **Cancel generation** from the menu at the top right. Lessons already saved are kept, so a partly drafted course is preserved, but the generation can't be resumed.
</Tip>

### Bite-size lessons

Courses are bite-size unless you choose otherwise, because learners give a lesson two or three minutes and finish what fits. A bite-size lesson teaches one idea in 300 to 500 words: the point up front, headings that state it, short paragraphs, a bold takeaway, and one concrete action to finish. It has at most one interactive block, and a block replaces the prose it came from rather than repeating it. A big topic becomes more lessons, not longer ones. Knowledge checks in a bite-size course have three to five questions (four to eight otherwise).

## Talk it through

**Talk it through instead** takes what you typed to the chat on your [Home](/docs/academy/owner-dashboard#ask-your-academy), where you can think the course through with Fayne Agent first: who it's for, what to cover, what to build first. The agent can look at your [Knowledge](/docs/content/knowledge) and at how your academy is doing. When you're ready, it hands your request, with any files you attached, to the course builder, and you continue from [the brief](#the-brief).

Each message costs 2 credits. Your chats are saved: **New chat** starts over, the recent chats menu reopens an earlier one, and Home picks up where you left off for up to 45 days.

## Ground it in your own material

The course is far more "yours" when Fayne reads your real frameworks, terminology, and examples. Add material in **Add material to build from** before you create the brief.

<Tabs>
  <Tab title="Files">
    Upload up to **2 PDFs**, each up to **150 pages** and **25 MB**, plus other files: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and EPUB (up to 50 MB). Password-protected PDFs are not supported: remove the password and re-upload.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Links and Google Drive">
    Add a web page or a YouTube video (its transcript is pulled), several at once if you like, or pick files from **Google Drive** when the button is shown.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Your Knowledge">
    **From your Knowledge** attaches sources you have already saved to [Knowledge](/docs/content/knowledge). Attaching one here only references it; removing it later detaches it without deleting the underlying source.
  </Tab>
</Tabs>

A course takes up to **2 PDFs and 5 other sources**. When it's full, remove one to add another.

The **Your sources** setting on the brief decides how closely the lessons follow your material. With **My words** or **Adapt**, the frameworks, terminology, examples, and stances in it carry through to the lessons rather than being replaced with generic equivalents. Your saved Knowledge identity (audience, voice, tone) is also folded in so the generation matches how you teach, the same context that powers [AI customization](/docs/content/ai-customization).

<Warning>
  Attached material is read at generation time. Add or remove sources before you create the outline; sources cannot be attached after drafting has begun.
</Warning>

## What you get

Generation creates a new draft course in your academy, populated with the drafted lessons, its modules, its checks, and its illustrations. It can also include a few [practice blocks](/docs/content/practice-blocks): an **Explain it back** where students need to explain an idea, and a **Rapid-fire drill** when your material lists real objections to practice. It is a normal course from there: edit any lesson, reorder them, rename modules, adjust a check's pass mark, set access, and publish when ready. Like every course you build, the result is your own editable copy, so refining it never affects anything in the [Explore Library](/docs/content/course-library).

## AI credits and access

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Which plans can generate courses">
    AI course generation is included on every plan, the preview trial included. What limits you in practice is your AI credit pool: the trial has a one-time pool of 100 credits (on top of the free first course from setup), and paid plans refill every billing period (Starter 1,000, Pro 2,500, Scale 5,000). See [AI credits](/docs/billing/plans#ai-credits).
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="How credits are consumed">
    * **The brief** and **the outline**: free.
    * **Drafting**: about 10 credits per lesson drafted (a check counts as a lesson), so a 10-lesson course uses about 100 credits.
    * **Messages to Fayne Agent** (the brief's side panel, or the chat on Home): 2 credits each.
    * **Illustrations**: free.
    * **Your first course from setup**: free, up to 8 lessons.

    If you are out of credits, the generation will not run until your pool refreshes or you upgrade.

  <Accordion title="What students see">
    Nothing about generation is visible to your students. They only ever see the finished, branded course once you publish it.
