# Welcome Questions: Learn Who Joins and Why

> Ask new members up to four questions once, right after they join. Read the answers per person, segment by them, and let the Learning Assistant use them.

Welcome questions are a short set of questions, up to four, that your academy asks a new member once, right after they sign in for the first time. A consultant asks "what brought you here" in the first minute of a call; welcome questions let your academy do the same. The answers show up on each person's profile, can drive Segments, and give the Learning Assistant something to personalize with.

They are off by default and never a gate: a member can skip them, and nothing about their access changes based on what they answer.

## Set them up

    In the owner sidebar click **Customize**, then under **Pages** choose **Welcome questions**.

  <Step title="Turn them on">
    Switch on **Ask new members a few questions when they join**. If you have nothing configured yet, Fayne drafts a starting set for you from your academy name, tagline, and course titles: who they are, where they are with the topic, what is in their way, and what they want to achieve.

  <Step title="Edit the questions">
    Reword any question, change its type, and edit the options. Use **Draft with AI** for a fresh set, or **Redraft with AI** later (it asks before replacing what you have).

  <Step title="Write your intro and closing">
    The **Intro message** is a short note from you, shown above the first question in your own voice. The **Closing message** appears on the last screen, under **Start here**, next to the recommended courses.

  <Step title="Check the preview and save">
    The preview beside the panel plays the member flow live, including unsaved edits, so you can click through it. Click **Save** in the panel's footer. Welcome questions have their own Save button, so saving elsewhere in Customize does not save them.

### Question types

| **Free text** | A free-text field with your placeholder as an example. |

Every choice question also offers **Something else**, which opens a free-text field. Members can always answer in their own words. Each choice question takes two to six options.

<Tip>
  Keep one free-text question, usually the goal ("In your own words, what are you trying to achieve here?"). Chips are quick to answer; the free-text answers are where the useful quotes come from.

### Editing questions that have answers

Questions and options keep their identity when you reword them, so existing answers stay attached. Removing a question hides it for new members but keeps the answers you already collected, marked **No longer asked** on the member's profile. Adding a question does not re-prompt existing members; they can answer it from their profile if they choose.

## What members experience

After their first sign-in, a member lands on a short, chrome-free welcome page in the same style as your sign-up screens: your logo, a thin progress bar with one segment per question, one question per step, a **Continue** button, and **Skip for now** underneath. It takes under a minute. The last screen, **Start here**, suggests up to three courses to begin with (usually two), each with a short reason tied to what they said.

Members can revisit and change their answers at any time from **Your answers** on their profile page, using **Update answers**.

Guests are never asked. Someone who buys as a guest sees the questions after their receipt, on the way to their first lesson, never before.

## Where the answers show up

    The **Answered welcome question** condition in the segment builder matches members who picked a given option, so you can send a Newsfeed post to everyone who said, for example, "just getting started", or filter your Insights to them. See [Audiences](/docs/students/audiences).

    The assistant reads a member's answers alongside the course they are in, so it can speak to their stated goal and blocker instead of explaining generically. Members are told it does this.

    Answers never enroll anyone, change access, or add people to Lists on their own. You decide what to do with them.
